Wednesday is ice practice during public session at the Kroc Center in Rolando. I've been to a couple ice rinks and used the rental skates and it appears that I might be the only ice speedskater in all of San Diego. So when my ice speed skates arrived, things started changing.
Stepping onto the ice begins with eyes staring at me while I do a couple warm up laps. Then a couple groups form: a pack of 6 yr old figure skating girls and a 2nd pack of 6 yr old hockey boys. Typically the girls whisper to each other until the brave one skates out: "Hey...hey...I like your skates!"
Me, "Thanks." Then she falls back to her friends as I hear across the rink, "He talked to me!" ...followed by giggles.
After a couple laps of courage, her friends push her back out..."Where did you..."
Me, "What?"
Girl, "What's your name?"
Me, "Juice." do a lap, "What's your name?"
Girl, "Delilah...why do you grab your but?"
LOL...at this point I'm doing circles in the middle so my left hand is stable behind me, although I can get lazy resting it to the side of my hip. Thanks kid for the coaching tip...chuckling and before I can get an answer out...
Delilah, "Where did you get your skates?"
Me, "Bulgaria." At this point I'm giggling inside as Delilah wrinkle nose and returns to her clique while wondering what or where Bulgaria is.
All the while the boys follow close behind and around like a flock of curious seagulls. If only I could think of some fun questions to ask back. If you have any ideas, please leave in the comments or share on Facebook.
