My family ROCKs. My cousin, Mary Beth, is a fun-a-holic that loves music, dancing, and people. Shortly after my birthday, MB wanted to get some time together and asked to come watch my ice practice. So I picked her up after work, and off we went to the Joan Kroc Center. We arrived, I got my skates on, set out onto the ice, and my cousin sat down on the bleachers, right next to a mom watching her little girl. After 4-5 laps around the ice, I looked over into the seats, and behind the glass I saw my cousin and this parent smiling, laughing, and talking... generally having a good time. Like a good Ogo descendant, MB made a new friend with a random stranger, which relieved my concerns that I would bore her to death from oval after oval. Back in the seats, the conversation quickly turned to the man in the black skates...
Skate mom, "Oh he's back! My daughter and I saw him last week and we were hoping to see him again."
Cousin Mary Beth replied, "Who's back?"
Mom. "The man in the black skates."
MB, "That's m cousin. Those are actually speed skates, and he's training to race." The conversation continued on.
At the end of session, Mary Beth had a pleasant surprise waiting for me off ice. "I found your first fan." She said.
I replied with wrinkled eyebrows, "I have a fan?"
"Yep." MB responded. "Come on, get your skates off and I'll introduce you." I met one of the sweetest little girls I've ever met. Jasmine is a figure skater and started taking lessons 3 years ago. The four of us chatted for a bit and then I asked mom if it was ok for daughter to take a picture with cousin and I.
Days often feel quite lonely. I wake up shortly after night owls have just hit the pillow. After morning workouts, I get to work and cram 8 hrs of focus onto my customers. Afterwards, I brave 1.5 hrs of rush hour traffic in hopes to get home, eat dinner, and hit the sack by 6pm so I can do it all over again starting at 2am the next day. Although I never expected strangers to take an interest in me, this little surprise brought some fun to the grind.
