The High School I am privileged to coach at plays at the bottom level in the San Diego Section of CIF Volleyball. I am so thrilled to be here though, because I get to be a part of the story...
Last spring I told my boys' team over and over that winning and losing doesn't matter, but how you get there does. I usually correct myself and then explain how the Ws and Ls do matter, because they determine whether we go to the playoffs and what seed we get if we do. However, in the long scheme of things they don't.
Sure, on paper or in the history books, anyone can see the quality of a program based on the number of wins and losses, but the numbers represent something so much more for those who were there. The 2015 boys will always remember the horrible win against Gompers at Del Lago, but history only shows the W. And although history only shows an L, the 2015 boys will also remember the championship-esq loss against Valhalla at home. The D4 boys stole the 3rd set from a quality D2 Valhalla team... who went on to win the D2 Championship that year. I find myself repeating that phrase over and over again this fall with the girls. How a team wins and how a team loses it what people remember. People who attended remember what the points represent.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose... what matters is how you do it.
